Let’s take a break from looking at individual watches to talk instead about one of the more collectible watch making companies…

In 1850, David Davis, Aaron Dennison, and Edward Howard founded the American Horologe Company to mass produce pocket watches. Fewer than 1000 watches were made under this name, as the company was renamed “The Boston Watch Company” three years later. Approximately 4,000 watches were made under this new name.

In 1857, he company ran into difficult financial times, and was sold in bankruptcy to Royal Robbins. It was renamed once again to “Appleton, Tracy, and Company”. Roughly 9,000 watches were produced under this name. In 1859, they merged with the Waltham Improvement Company to finally form the American Waltham Watch Company.

This company continued to produce high-quality watches in the US for nearly 100 years, finally transferring all production to Waltham International SA in Switzerland in 1957. Waltham International continues to this day to make top-quality watches, carrying on the tradition started 150 years eariler.

Early Waltham Pocket watches are sought after by watch and antique collectors the world over.

This watch is both beautiful and practical. It’s quite a value — Invicta watches often sell for twice the price.

This is a solid watch, unlike the typical slender jewelry-style watches often featured for women. Note the dimensions carefully, this is a chronograph intended for every day, active use.

The bezel is stainless steel, with 16 tiny diamonds accenting the finish. Those diamonds are indeed tiny, but add an elegant look. The dial face is a shimmering mother of pearl that includes three silver smaller dials to measure different time increments.

The hands are made of a luminous glow-in-the-dark Tritnite, holding their glow for up to a full day after being exposed to daylight. The watch case is stainless steel with a bracelet brand and deployment clasp.

One of the earliest examples of a pocket watch produced by the American Waltham Pocket Watch Company. This is an early Model 57. The 15 jewel, P.S. Bartlett movement on this watch is complete and in excellent condition.

This watch was actually produced by the Appleton, Tracy and Company, a predecessor of the Waltham Watch Company, and the dial is signed as such. The Appleton, Tracy and Company merged with the Waltham Improvement Company to become the American Waltham Watch Company shortly after this watch was produced.

The Waltham Watch Company produced over thirty-three million watches over their one-hundred year lifespan. These watches are some of the most sought-after collectible, antique watches.
