About Anne Klein
Born Hannah Golofski in 1923, Anne Klein lived in New York her entire life.
Originally trained as an an artist in the thirties, she began her career as a fashion designer in 1940. She married Ben Klein in 1939 at the age of eighteen and took his name to become Anne Klein.
In 1948, Anne founded Junior Sophisticates to design clothes for younger women and remained at the helm for nearly twenty years. In 1968, she founded Anne Klein and Co. along with her second husband Chip) Rubinstein.
Over the next several years, she would enjoy the pinnacle of her career. She was inducted into the Coty Fashion hall of fame in 1971, won the Neiman-Marcus fashion leadership award in 1969 and, along with other fashion luminaries Yves St. Laurent, Pierre Cardin and Christian Dior, participated in a star-studded fashion show at Versailles in 1973 to raise money for the estate.
In 1974, at the age of 51, Anne Klein succumbed to breast cancer. Her firm was led by Donna Karan until Karan left to form her own successful venture. Today, Anne Klein and Co. continues to be known as a trend-setting design firm focused on elegant, practical style for women.
